This year, for a quilted pillow.

There is one main pictorial design. But with three style options. First “pure”, then “minimal”, and last the “twinkling” version. All are sewn fully in FPP (Foundation Paper Piecing).

Pick again from three English options.
Sorry, there is no German option this year.

Due to my cutting mishap, I am still only able to work with one hand, and it is slow going… I might also only start midway through with sewing myself. So some things might be a bit bumpier than expected, but I hope we will nonetheless have a lot of fun and manage to finish the pattern/pillow during Advent.

How It Works

Starting December 1st till December 24th – aka the German counting system :) – each day will equal one “door” to open in the online advents calendar. You will find it during Advent on the homepage.

The door contains the sew-along instructions plus sometimes Christmas-y content or giveaways – aka presents ;)

What are the material requirements?

You will mainly need the background plus scraps and “pillow construction” fabric/material.

How big is the pillow/ quilt?

18″ pillow cover (“pure” and “minimal”) design or
24″ pillow cover (“twinkling”) design or
40″ baby quilt

Can you give us a few hints about the pattern?

Yes of course! This year we are sewing a geometric representation of a very Christmas-y motiv. So it is a pictorial design in a modern style.

What is the skill level of the pattern?

The skill level is intermediate.

It is an FPP design with many units and small pieces – due to the pillow size. The baby/wall size might technically be easier due to the bigger size even though it is more pieces.

Basic knowledge of foundation paper piecing and basic quilting techniques is assumed.

I am a (confident) beginner, can I participate? *

Rating a quilting pattern is somewhat personal. As is estimating your own skill level.

I’d suggest at least FPP experience and some perseverance to “wriggle” with the tiny pieces if you attempt the pillow size. Or you opt for the baby/wall hanging size. It is the same design but bigger pieces which might make it easier.

Also consider looking at the non-mystery version – if that does not spoil you fun – to see if it might fit your comfort level.

What colors/fabrics should I use?

You will need a background fabric plus 1 or as many as 14 additional colors (hues) for the motive, as it has 14 shapes. All will touch the background, but not each other.

If you sew the “minimal” or “twinkling” version, I would suggest different values (tint, tones and shades) within each shape. You can use Christmas color combinations. But the design also works in other color palettes.

If you are doing the mystery version, I will give you placement suggestions for 3+B and 4+B color combinations.

Consider solids, blenders, and other non-directional small-scale prints.

What if I want to sew a non-mystery version? *

No problem! There is a non-mystery version for those like me who need to know everything up front ;)

The only rule is to keep the design completely to yourself so as not to spoil anyone else’s surprise.

When are the doors open?

The doors are open ONLY on the same day. Please take into account that the blog runs on the UTC+1 timezone (Berlin, Germany).

What can I do if I can’t open a door?

Please check the date/time. The doors are open ONLY on the same day. The time zone of this blog is UTC+1 (Berlin, Germany). If you try to open a future door, you will have to be patient. Yes, I know that is very hard for your inner child ;)

In case you missed a day, you can upgrade to the Candy Cane or Gingerbread version. Those versions include downloadable zip files with all doors.

How do the Peppermint | Candy Cane | Gingerbread versions work?

To spare you the extra costs of a course-like structure, I have devised a way to make this work with the normal advent calendar and shop system.

Peppermint:
This version is free, but you must remember to return every day. There will be no option to open past doors!

Candy Cane:
This version is about the price of one to two coffees and I hope you will support me and my small business this way.

It also includes some extras to make it worth your while :)

The download for all doors will be available on Dec 1 at the latest.
I will organize them in individual .pdf files so that you can keep the mystery!

Summary pattern:
This will be a condensed version of the full advent calendar content in pattern format and will have better readability. It will contain the 18″ pillow information. The release will be after Christmas, and you can then download it via your original purchase link.

Gingerbread:
This is the luxury version and true to my style will include more options.

All doors in advance*:
Download all the doors for both designs “minimal” and “twinkling” in one swoop. So you can look at doors ahead or work with past doors in case you miss a day or two ;)

Please remember that you can show your progress only on or after that day is released in the advent calendar schedule.

What can I do to receive the daily newsletter? And why?

The daily newsletter will remind you to check the online door. They do sometimes contain giveaways so you better do check them :)

The daily newsletter reminder is sent to you when you purchase the Candy Cane or Peppermint version of this sew-along AND sign up for the email. In your “purchase download” is a .pdf with all the information including a link for the signup. Please go there and enter your email. And don’t forget to confirm the opt-in!
