Progress on Scrappy Gems

Before I write up my quarterly review, I wanted to show the progress on my Scrappy Gems project.

You may remember that I started this as my “brain-free” chain-piecing project for a sewing retreat in April.

The start was to organize my Ombre Galaxy Fat Quarter bundle in rainbow order and then color-group.

The cutting part was done very quickly, as I just needed three different-width strips per Fat Quarter, plus background strips.

I even presorted them for the retreat. A fun bouquet of fabric strips ;)

And then the chain-piecing fun could start. The left picture is actually the only one I took from this project at the sewing weekend. I am apparently not so good at remembering to take progress pictures when in full sewing mode.

At first, I worked within a color group: I finished the strip-piecing, then cut into subunits and sewed them together into blocks.

After my first cutting mistake and realizing that you actually HAD to take care of orientation of that “white diagonal line”…. I befriended my seam ripper – once again – and then switched to only finishing as much of the strip-piecing as possible. Which was about a third.

Let me tell you, sewing brain-fog was a real thing Sunday afternoon ;)

On the left are the few blocks I finished during the weekend. On the right is a block and strip mash-up I threw up on the design wall as soon as I got home because I was eager to find out if the color flow would work ;)

And then we had all the units ready for assembly. You can see me slowly working through the color groups.

And: Ta Da *drumroll*

The “almost” final layout.

One block still needs seam-ripping and reassembling. I found it at a later stage and could not meet that friend called seam ripper yet again. The other block is still missing because I need to recut from my leftover fabric for that strip set I miscut.

Depending on how the math is working out for my leftover fabric, I might add another 2.5 to 5 inch. Either fully around this design or only on the top and bottom, as it would be better if the quilt were longer.

But first, connecting this rainbow glory of blocks.

Though after the heatwave of currently about 90°F – sometimes a bit lower, sometimes a bit higher – is over. Without air conditioning, it is already really warm in my apartment. I am NOT going to set up an iron or quilt during these weather conditions ;)

I hope you are staying cool!
