Tambo Star — Finished!

No. 9 of my WIP List for Q3 is finished!

Tambo Star, which I often call my sunset quilt due to the color inspiration & gradient, just went on a big trip to the Canary Islands – specifically to Fuerteventura. Just so that I could grab a few fun pictures for the blog. Slightly silly? Maybe, probably…

For sure, this finish will have a lot of pictures. Maybe grab your favorite beverage before you scroll on. Oh, and be forewarned… some sweaty, red-faced pictures of me are also making an appearance ;)

Because besides carrying an extra piece of hand luggage to transport it, it is also perfectly normal that you walk a trail with a quilt in hand, right?

And after that cliffside walk, now lounging in the caves of Ajuy.

It is a fairly easy walk, but in about 90° heat and being so out of shape, I am very sweaty and red-faced. But don’t fret; no quilts and no quilt-carriers were harmed.

Our next stop was Betancuria, the old capital of the island. On our way there, we passed the giant statues of pre-Hispanic kings Guise and Ayose.

Afterward, we visited three museums, connected by their desire to show cultural heritage. First up was “Los Molinos” the name of the type of windmill in the picture. We learned about Gofio – a flour made of roasted grains or grain mixtures. The roasting gives it its special taste, and mixed with water or goat milk (or more modern olive oil and some sugar) it will be kneaded into a nutritious “paste”.

We actually got to try it, and we bought some Gofio (flour) for an experience with the little ones of friends & family at home.

Next up was “El Museo del Queso Majorero” to learn all about the goat cheese. The experience also included a cactus garden with huuuuge exemplars.

And last, the “Salinas del Carmen” the only saltworks on Fuerteventura still in operation. They collect the salt from the foam of the waves.

Honestly, we were pretty beat by then – 10+ hours on a trip, often on your feet, will do that to you – and probably obtained only a tiny percentage of the information.

The skeleton in the background is of a fin whale. But I don’t remember any information on how it relates to the salt mines – if even. But it looked very cool!

And of course some pictures on the beach – including a view of the pieced back.

And finally we need some quilting and binding close-ups. But yeah, you made it! Thank you for following along on this journey. :)
